Papers, 1765-1776.

Two volumes kept by Stephen Peabody. The first is a diary kept while a student at Harvard College from 24 May 1767 to 23 May 1768. The second contains a manuscript copy of the Laws of Harvard College together with recollections of Peabody's settlement as the first minister of the First Congregational Church of Atkinson, N.H. and a controversy between newly elected deacons over land rights. The second volume also includes an account of gifts in kind and interest-bearing paper money received from parishioners.

Stephen Peabody (1741-1819) was born in Andover, Mass. He was a 1769 graduate of Harvard College and became the first minister of the First Congregational Church of Atkinson, N.H., where he served faithfully from 1772 until his death. He married Mary (Polly) Haseltine (1741-1793) of Bradford, Mass. in 1773. They had two children: Stephen (1773-1851) and Mary (1775-1856).
